d design travel SHIMANE EXHIBITION ( 2025.3.20 - 2025.6.29 )

Nowadays, the individuality of each region is being lost in the urbanization of modern Japan. In this individuality, there is a long-established local way of life. To reaffirm its importance, we have published a travel guide for each of the 47 prefectures, called "d design travel. This exhibition celebrates the launch of the Shimane edition, the 35th prefecture.

Shimane Prefecture is the birthplace of the term "depopulation" and has been widely derided as the "most rural" prefecture in Japan, with the cities farthest from Tokyo. However, this negative image is now changing into a positive one. This might be misleading, but we are really glad that Shimane is in the "shadows." It's precisely because of her insular nature that a unique history and culture have emerged, fostering a disposition and ethos unique to Shimane Prefecture.

At this exhibition site, you could enjoy the unique items of Shimane Prefecture, specially borrowed tools, daily necessities, and handicrafts that are actually used in the area. Most of the items in this exhibition were found by the editor-in-chief during his research, and all of them have a history and development. The more you learn about them, the more interesting they become, and the longer they have been part of the fabric of Shimane Prefecture. We hope that through the exhibits, visitors will learn about the "designs" that exist and are unique to Shimane Prefecture.

We also hope that this exhibition and the Shimane issue will be an opportunity for you to get to know Shimane Prefecture, and indeed all of Japan, and to feel the importance of the "individuality of each location".

The "Shimane Bussan Market" is also held at the exhibition, showcasing souvenirs from Shimane Prefecture that the editors of "d design travel SHIMANE" have come across in their research and would like to recommend, as well as "Shimane-style" crafts selected by d47 MUSEUM.

It features about 200 items of Shimane Prefecture's proud craftsmanship, including handmade vessels, Japanese paper and indigo-dyed products, unique products made of scrap pieces from Iwami Kagura, and "shijimi (basket clam)" from Lake Shinji to delicious souvenirs such as sweets and sake made with local ingredients, and so on. We hope you will enjoy this exhibition together with the book and the exhibition.
