No. 032
Manufacturing Area: Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture
Manufacturer: Showa Industries Co.,Ltd.
Technique: Twill Weave
Material: Cotton 100%
Showa Co.,Ltd. was founded about 120 years ago in Kojima, Kurashiki City, the birthplace of denim in Japan. The company has 10 Toyota GL-3 shuttle looms, one of the few remaining in the world, which are set and operated daily by skilled craftsmen. The "selvage denim" produced on these looms is woven at low speeds while allowing the yarns to swell, preserving the softness, bumps, and irregularities of the original yarns. The yarn used is rope dyed, which only a few companies in Japan, including Showa, can do. To prevent the blue color from penetrating to the center of the yarn, the yarn is dyed in bunches so that white areas will appear as the fabric is used over time, giving it a unique denim look that changes with age.
