d design travel is a series of guidebooks that introduces each of the 47 prefecture's "long-lasting individuality" or "uniqueness" from an artistic viewpoint. In each series, the editorial team spends 2 months traveling around each prefecture and features articles on experiences that impressed them.

The design of Ise is refined day by day

Some elements of Japanese lifestyles can be traced back to Mie and the Ise-jingu. The oldest banknotes in Japan, for example, are thought to be the Yamada hagaki used by the Ise Jingu tour guides. People of Japan learned about Ise through Ise merchants and onshi, the tour guides, taking back various aspects to their hometowns. There are likely to be other elements from various regions that are based on Ise lifestyles, too. Combined with the geographical conditions, Ise has formed new customs while maintaining their innate beauty. It is the ordinary workings of daily life that have created the Mie we know. Moreover, design elements unique to the prefecture continue to see enhancement today.

One Note on the Cover : The Sky Is Moving (2018) by Michiko Nakatani

Although at first glance Nakatani's work looks like a painting, it is in fact 3D. Due to its sunken form, depending on the angle, the crows can resemble plants, the sea, or even wind, making you question what is really there. We spent about two months searching for the essence of Mie, and discovered that it can be found in the everyday. This trip enhanced our appreciation for the familiar things in front of us.

*The books are written in Japanese and English.

"Traveling long life design"

D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT, which works on the theme of "Long-Life Design", has selected the long-lasting "individuality" and "character" of each of the 47 prefectures from a design perspective and compiled them into a tourist guide called "d design travel".

"d design travel" presents only those things that have truly impressed the reader from the perspective of "long-life design" after traveling to the area as if the editors lived there. The "long-lasting things" and "local characteristics" that have taken root in each prefecture are selected and published as "d-mark reviews" in six categories, such as sights, restaurants, cafes, shops, hotels, and people.

"d design travel" is not an ordinary guidebook full of information, but a design travel series that introduces places that have a vitality and a message from the local area that will last even 10 years, confirmed by the sense of D&DEPARTMENT.
